The last year has been filled with constant conversations around superhero films, the chaos at a certain studio (yes, the DCU), content lacking substance in another (hey, MCU), discussions about superhero fatigue, and, ultimately, booking tickets for the latest flicks from the realm. Superhero movies have been a part of almost every discussion about cinema at large. Some have written off the genre as having run its course, some hold out hope, and then there are those like us who feel the magic of a fantasy story that takes you far from reality is here to stay. Four guys going to space and coming back with power (Fantastic Four), or a superhero who teaches you manners (Shaktiman) may require a l ot of suspension of disbelief, but it all feels so refreshing when you come out from the other side of the experience.
So, there's no way one can write off the genre and say there shouldn't be any superhero movies. You can ask for a change in the way they are made and the approach that the makers have, but you can't stop them. This week, the world celebrates Superhero Day, a day where we applaud the real and reel superheroes who have helped us overcome tough times and maybe even saved the world for real. Lionsgate Play, which comes with your OTTplay Premium subscription, has some of the most interesting superhero movies in their library.
Today, we bring you some superhero movies that are available on the Lionsgate Play app that are not from the Marvel Cinematic Universe or DCU realm, but are totally different. Read on and add them to your watchlist to binge them all this weekend.
Our childhood felt validated when the makers announced that Power Rangers would have a film franchise. The 2017 release took the essence of the show we all grew up watching and turned it into a film that was pretty interesting. A young bunch of students get superpowers and now have the responsibility to save the world. The film did bring back memories of watching the show as a kid, and there's no way we can deny that.
When Max, a teenager, discovers that his body can generate the most powerful energy in the world, his excitement knows no bounds. He then meets an extraterrestrial being named Steel, who is powerful but extremely hilarious and outgoing. They decide to merge their powers, and Max Steel is formed. Their union is an indestructible force, but an enemy is probably even stronger. An alien force attacks, and now they need to save the day by using their strength and staying together.
Hellboy, the iconic half-demon, is busy battling a trio of rampaging giants when he first encounters Nimue, the Blood Queen. She is an ancient sorceress resurrected and out to avenge a past betrayal. Hellboy is now stuck between the humans and the supernatural realm while he has the duty to save the world from ending at the hands of Nimue. The film opened to quite good reviews back in the day, and the franchise indeed flourished more.
A visual spectacle, Robin Hood is in a way a coming-of-age drama where a war-hardened crusader takes center stage. As the name suggests, it's about a man fighting the system on behalf of an entire populace and wants them to have their rights. The 2018 directorial is mounted on a massive budget and is a visual treat with good performances and decent direction.
