Masoom, directed by Shekhar Kapur and starring Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Urmila Matondkar, and Jugal Hansraj, was an emotionally charged film that was released in 1983. Now, over four decades later, the director is filming Masoom: The Next Generation, a sequel that will take place in Mumbai. He intends to film the entire movie in one continuous schedule. The sequel, while not an exact continuation of the 1983 film, also explores the subject of family ties. The film will explore the many meanings of home, including love, relationships, memories, and identities, according to Padma Bhushan winner Kapur.

Masoom 2: Fresh take on family bonds

The filmmaker told Mid Day that shooting will start in the next months. He is recording all five of the songs written by Nirali Kartik and Kartik Shah's band, Maati Baani. Their music has a contemporary twist on traditional Indian folk styles. In the original Masoom, his songs will have to compete.

After Kapur finishes recording the soundtrack, he says the unit will construct the set in Mumbai. The film is heavily focused on performances, and he prefers not to overextend his actors. He wants them to explore the movie and their characters according to their own terms.

Naturally, they will attend workshops and put in weeks of rehearsal time prior to filming. Azmi, Shah, Manoj Bajpayee, Nithya Menen, and Kapur's daughter Kaveri will appear on the first schedule.

Kaveri Kapur's role and character dynamics

The filmmaker elaborates by saying that Kaveri plays the daughter of an Indian father and an American mother. This is in contrast to Shabana and Naseer, who both play 80-year-olds.

Kapur's parents' desire to construct a house in Delhi inspired him to begin writing the screenplay for the film ten years ago.
