Three years in the making and a budget running into 3 figures, Dhruva Sarja’s Martin needed not only a big opening but a sustained good run at the box office to recover its money. However, the AP Arjun directorial, which was in the news for all wrong reasons before the release and immediately after too, had a good opening on the strength of the actor’s fan following, but then crashed and burnt following negative reviews from all quarters.
Last week, the film made its way to OTT, dropping on Amazon Prime Video’s store for US and UK viewers only. This came as a surprise, as the buzz was that the film’s rights had gone to Zee Network. Usually, if Prime Video opts for a staggered release for certain films, the India outing happens within a few days of the overseas drop.
There’s been no sign of Martin on Prime Video India, and the latest is that the India streaming rights may not be with the platform after all. The buzz on social media was that Martin will be on ZEE5 in India and that the film will begin streaming on November 23. OTTplay spoke to a Martin team member and confirmed that the film's streaming rights are with Prime Video only, on pay-per-view basis. The satellite rights for the Kannada version of the film are with Zee Kannada.
Meanwhile, the overseas OTT release of Martin has resulted in a new flurry of negative reviews on social media. Audiences who have watched it now have been posting some of the most ‘cringe-worthy’ scenes from the film and are sympathizing with those who watched it on the big screen.
Based on a story by Action King Arjun Sarja, Martin had Dhruva in a double role – a customs officer called Arjun and a gangster called Martin. The cat-and-mouse chase between the two forms the crux of the narrative.
