There’s no denying that Unni Mukundan’s Marco has become a box-office juggernaut that few would have expected, especially in terms of how much the Malayalam film has fetched from markets outside Kerala. The movie closed its third week with an Indian market gross of almost Rs 57 Cr and worldwide collection of Rs 100Cr+, according to industry trackers Sacnilk.

In its first three weeks, the Haneef Adeni directorial has already dethroned the box office collections of several superstar films including Mammootty’s Bheeshmaparvam, Mohanlal’s Neru, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Guruvayoor Amabalanadayil and lately, Tovino Thomas’ Ajayante Randam Moshanam in its Rs 100 Cr box-office run.

Can Marco surpass Lucifer’s worldwide box office collections?

Next in sight is the box-office collection record of Mohanlal-Prithviraj's Lucifer, which had earned close to Rs 126 Cr in 2019. It would be a feat if Marco does have the legs to surpass the film, with the Unni Mukundan-action now nearing the end of its theatrical run. Even if it does, the hype of L2 Empuraan along with positive reviews could mean that the Lucifer franchise would reclaim its spot and maybe finish even higher in April 2025.

Marco, which released in theatres on December 20, has maximised its revenue, thanks to its Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions contributing to its box office earnings as well as aggressive marketing techniques that few Malayalam films had used earlier.

The movie has already raked in Rs 13.05 Cr in its third week, a fall from Rs 16.3 Cr in the second week and Rs 27.6 Cr in the opening week, according to Sacnilk. With several big releases lined up in all South languages this week, Marco will also see a decline in the number of screens – cutting short its reign at the box office.

Marco, now, could end its box-office run between Rs 110-Rs 115 Cr, still a sizeable earning for a film that is rated A and had targeted a niche audience.

Marco OTT release in January end?

While there have been several reports that suggested that Marco will release on OTT through Netflix by the end of January, the film’s producer dismissed these claims , saying that they are yet to sell the streaming rights of the movie.

The team, however, has had discussions with several OTT platforms, before its theatrical release.
