Billed as the most violent Indian film, Malayalam star Unni Mukundan’s latest movie Marco more than lived up to the hype. The Haneef Adeni-directorial, which has already grossed over Rs 35 Cr worldwide as per the makers, is one of the most brutal and violent action films to come out from the industry, with many even saying that it takes the violence on the level of certain South Korean films of the genre.
Netizens too have been having discussion of various social media platforms, comparing it with some of the recent Indian films including Sandeep Vanga Reddy and Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, Lakshya and Raghav Juyal’s Kill as well as Thalapathy Vijay and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Leo, to rank which tops the most-violent film list in India in the recent years.
Unni Mukundan's Marco revolves around a toxic and violent youth who goes on a revenge spree after the death of his brother. Marco features some of the most stomach-churning violence in a Malayalam movie, if not an Indian film, with scenens of dismemberment of animals and humans, and brutal killing of children and women.
This has drawn comparisons with Ranbir Kapoor and Sandeep Vanga Reddy's blockbuster Animal the most, with many users preferring the Unni Mukundan film over the Bollywood movie.
Some social media users still favoured Animal, for its engaging storyline and big-screen experience that Marco lacked. Though they agreed that Marco had some brutal scenes, the intensity and emotional highs required for such films to truly connect with the audience even after leaving the theatres was missing in the Unni Mukundan-starrer, which grossed over Rs 35 Cr worldwide after Day 3, as per Twitter users.
Irrespective of which is the more violent film, the success of all these movies are surely going to mean that there will be more coming. Sure, these films might not be for the faint-hearted, but action films have always enjoyed a massive fanbase in the country.
Unni Mukundan, in a recent interaction with the media, had said that he hopes to do more action films. "It's a genre that appeals to the youth," he said, adding that he is committed to making great action films and that he was happy he could do with Marco.

Marco has already garnered Rs 2.2 Cr from rest of India market in the first three days of its release. With word of mouth spreading, fans believe that movie has potential to penetrate tier 3 centres in the North as well, if the distributors make it available. Marco's biggest competition in the North will be from Varun Dhawan's Baby John, which is also an action entertainer --- a remake of the Tamil film Theri, starring Thalapathy Vijay. Incidentally, Marco also has a few scenes especially in its climax stunt sequences that would remind fans of Vijay's Leo.
