For those who missed watching Unni Mukundan’s Marco in theatres during its 50-day run, the A-rated action-thriller will begin streaming on Sony LIV and OTTplay Premium from February 14 onwards. The film, which will be released in Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada and its original version in Malayalam, is helmed by Haneef Adeni and emerged as one of the biggest hits in 2024.
Though only its Hindi and Malayalam versions were released in theatres on December 20, the movie’s appeal soon caught on and by the first week of January, the makers of the film were ready with its Telugu and Tamil versions.
The movie revolves around a ruthless brother, Marco, returning from exile to avenge the murder of his visually challenged stepbrother. However, his enemies are more formidable than he initially thought and his family gets caught in the crossfire – leading to heavy losses on both sides. Marco was rated A for its gruesome sequences featuring dismemberment of limbs and violence against women and children.
It’s to be noted that though Sony LIV had acquired the streaming rights of the South languages, the rights for the Hindi version are yet to be sold. The Tamil and Telugu versions of the movie will begin streaming on February 14 onwards.
The Hindi version could be streamed on another platform. Incidentally, it’s the Hindi dubbed version of the film which has also helped Marco's record-setting run in North India for a Malayalam movie. The film has become the highest-grossing Malayalam movie in North India.
The prime reason to stream Marco, if you have a stomach for violent action scenes that mirror some Korean movies, is its protagonist Unni Mukundan, who plays the titular role with the right amount of swagger required.
While Marco is thin on the storyline, the performances of its villains, Kabir Duhan Singh and Abhimanyu Thilakan, as well as its different action pieces more than makeup for this. The background score by KGF composer Ravi Basrur is another reason, why the viewers found the thriller to be enjoyable in theatres.
