The makers of Unni Mukundan’s Marco will be betting big on the dubbed versions of the violent action-thriller to push the film to the Rs 100 Cr club in 2025. The Hindi version of the Malayalam film, which was released in theatres on December 20, is already raking in good money at the box office, and the Tamil and Telugu versions will be expected to replicate the feat.
The Malayalam movie, which is helmed by Haneef Adeni, had hit theatres as a Christmas release and has already gone on to gross Rs 34 Cr from the Indian market from just the original and Hindi-dubbed versions. The overall worldwide gross is expected to be around Rs 70 Cr for the film, which was produced on a budget of Rs 30 Cr.
Following its success in North India, where the movie had initially just 34 shows and has now increased to over 600 in just over a week, the makers of Marco announced that the Tamil version of the film will hit theatres in Tamil Nadu on January 3, 2025.
On January 1, 2025, the movie’s Hindi version will be released in theatres across GCC, which has already proven to be the next best market for Marco after Kerala. Marco's Telugu version, the rights of which were sold for Rs 3 Cr along with a share of profits, is also set to hit theatres in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh on New Year’s Day.
What has helped Marco’s push for the Rs 100 Cr club is the lack of good releases in any of these languages for the next two weeks. The lacklustre reviews for Baby John meant that the shows of Marco as well as Mufasa: The Lion King had replaced the Varun Dhawan-starrer. The Unni Mukundan film is expected to get a good run for almost two weeks in North India.
Meanwhile, Tamil and Telugu too don’t have big releases till January 10, which clears the schedule for the Malayalam movie in these States. But closer to home, Tovino Thomas’ Identity, which will hit theatres on January 2, and Asif Ali’s Rekhachithram, which releases on January 10, is expected to take over from Marco – which surpassed other Christmas competitors such as Rifle Club, Barroz and Extra Decent with ease.
