Boosted by more shows in North India, Malayalam action film Marco saw a spike at the Indian box office on Saturday, raking in Rs 2.70 Cr, as per early estimates by industry tracker Sacnilk. This takes the Unni Mukundan-starrer's overall tally to Rs 32.6 Cr from Indian markets.
As per reports, the film saw an increase in the number of shows in North India from 34 to 140, and this is set to improve further on Sunday, with as many as 225 shows, according to its makers.
Marco’s Indian box office collection of Day 7 and 8 had dropped to Rs 2.5Cr and Rs 2.3Cr, as per Sacnilk, before picking up on Day 9.
The makers have already announced that the violent action-thriller has grossed over Rs 50 crore worldwide. After Day 9, the total worldwide collection stands close to Rs 64 crore, according to industry trackers – with shows in the GCC regions leading its overseas gross.
It was also a promising beginning for the weekend for the movie, with its Hindi version, which itself had collected Rs 50 lakh by Saturday, reported to be the preferred choice for a lot of theatre owners in the North after the dismal box office performance of Varun Dhawan’s Baby John .
Pushpa 2: The Rule is the only other competition for the movie in the North Indian belt. It could also be the first time that a Malayalam film’s Hindi version is competing and almost winning at the Hindi box office, against a Bollywood movie. Varun’s Baby John, which also has Malayali actress Keerthy Suresh, is the remake of Thalapathy Vijay’s Theri.
Unni, who was in Mumbai on Saturday to promote the Hindi version of the film, confirmed that he had dubbed himself for the movie. “We didn’t want the audience to feel that it is just another dubbed version of a South film. We have tried to ensure the quality is retained,” said the actor. The movie also has Kabir Duhan Singh, Siddique, Jagadeesh and Durva Thacker as part of its cast.
