Malayalam industry could very well be eyeing at greenlighting more brutal action films as its latest venture Marco, which has Unni Mukundan in the lead, has been setting new box office records for an A-rated film from the industry.
The movie, which is directed by Haneef Adeni, had already collected close to Rs 9 Cr in its first two days, and took this tally even further, grossing Rs 5.25 Cr from Indian markets on Day 3 to close its opening weekend with a stellar Rs 14.20 Cr – the first-time ever for a Malayalam action film.
Marco, which was dubbed as the most violent action-film from Malayalam ever and pretty much lived up to that name with its brutal violence, had done better than all its box-office competitors – including Aashiq Abu’s Rifle Club, Suraj Venjaramoodu’s Extra Decent and Vijay Sethupathi’s Viduthalai: Part 2.
As per sources from the film’s team, Marco has grossed Rs 35 Cr worldwide – an increase of Rs 14 Cr on Sunday alone. The movie is currently running in theatres across Australia and Middle East.
As per industry trackers Sacnilk, the film saw an average theatre occupancy of 78% on Sunday – a good sign, especially during a weekend for a film of a violent nature. It needs to be seen whether Marco can sustain the momentum throughout the Christmas week, with the early movie-viewers belonging to the 18 to 35-years-old male demographic.
Meanwhile, Marco has also collected Rs 2.22 Cr from the rest of India market, with the Hindi version of the film fetching a good Rs 11 lakh out of the total Rs 96 lakh on Sunday.
Marco’s next competition at the box office will be the Christmas day releases – Mohanlal's Barroz and Varun Dhawan’s Baby John. While the former is a 3D children’s fantasy film, Baby John is an action entertainer.
In a recent media interaction, Unni said that he was also looking forward for Mohanlal’s directorial debut, but stated that he hopes the success of Marco leads to more action films. “It’s a genre that would appeal to the youth,” Unni said.
