The movie streams in India on ZEE5 for fans and is now making a massive buzz at the Cannes Film Festival after being honoured with a standing ovation.
Naseeruddin Shah attended the Cannes Film Festival for the first time with a movie that he starred in half a century ago. The legendary Indian actor was in attendance at the festival with Prateik Babbar, who is the son of the late Smita Patil. The 1976 classic film was screened at the prestigious event at the Salle Buñuel on May 17. It is the only Indian movie to have been selected under the Classics Section at the festival this year. With Naseeruddin Shah walking the red carpet and attending the screening, the movie got a standing ovation from the audience. Clips also show Prateik Babbar hugging Shah after the screening.
Manthan is a movie that created a shining example back in the day. The movie was made with crowdfunding and was the first of its kind by the visionary director Shyam Benegal. Over 5 lakh farmers had donated ₹2 each back in the day to get the film made. The movie revolves around the Milk Revolution Movement of Dr. Verghese Kurien, who is regarded as the father of the White Revolution in India. Shyam Benegal developed the script with Dr. Kurien and Vijay Tendulkar.
Alongside Smita Patil, the movie also stars Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad, Mohan Agashe, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Anant Nag, and Amrish Puri.
