The sky seems to be the limit for the latest Malayalam movie, Manjummel Boys . Starring an ensemble cast of non-stars, this survival drama about friendship and loyalty has made history by becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all time.
Manjummel Boys has surpassed the worldwide collection of 2023's 2018. The latter was both a commercial and critical blockbuster, with its worldwide earnings pegged at about Rs 175 crore. However, Manjummel Boys has outearned it within four weeks of its theatrical debut, setting a new box office benchmark for upcoming Malayalam movies.
It's noteworthy that the terrific box office run of the 2018 movie, starring Tovino Thomas, was cut short by its early OTT release. The film, honouring its pre-release contractual obligation, started streaming on SonyLIV after only a four-week theatrical run.
At the time of its OTT debut, it was dominating screens in India and even showed the potential of becoming the first film to cross the Rs 100 crore mark at the Kerala box office if it had an extended theatrical run.
The OTT release of the 2018 film brought its glorious run to an immediate halt. However, the makers of Manjummel Boys have no such commitments and can wait until the craze over the film fully plays out across cinemas.
The filmmakers seem to be in no rush to release the film on streaming, giving it ample opportunity to fully capitalize on its growing popularity. With no new big films coming out in the next few weeks, Manjummel Boys might remain one of the most preferred movies for audiences in the South Indian states.
Manjummel Boys, written and directed by Chidambaram, found huge success with Tamil audiences as well. The film has raked in more than Rs 32 crore from Tamil Nadu alone, making it the biggest-ever Malayalam hit in the state.
