Famous fashion designer Manish Malhotra was reported to debut as a film director with a biopic on the legendary late actress Meena Kumari. Kriti Sanon was supposed to be playing the role of the iconic actress. However, in a recent interview, the fashion designer revealed that he is no longer directing the film. Will the film be shelved? Manish Malhotra-directed Meena Kumari's biopic update
As reported by Mid-Day, Manish Malhotra won't direct the biopic on Meena Kumari, starring Kriti Sanon and the project has been shelved.
Sharing updates on the project, he shared, “I’m no longer doing the biopic. I’ll direct something else. Directing is one dream that remains unfulfilled.”
The ace fashion designer also added that all fashion designers don’t have a film sense, but some do. As per him, it was organic for him because he was in love with films since childhood, watching Mughal-e-Azam [1960] or the works of Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt. "I love the ’70s, their songs and costumes. I am steeped in films. That’s why I get how it works," Manish added.
More about Meena Kumari biopic
The biopic was scheduled to roll in October 2023. However, it was pushed to October 2024 and then October 2025. The film has now been shelved. A source told Mid-Day earlier in July, “The material will be vetted by multiple script doctors before it goes into filming. In a way, the delay might be good for the team."
The earlier source also mentioned that since it’s a period drama, this allows them ample time for pre-production. Costumes are also a big part when recounting the story of one of Hindi cinema’s finest actors, and their recreation will take time. It will most likely roll in the first half of 2025. However, Manish confirmed that the project has now been shelved.
Biopic on Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi
Siddharth P Malhotra is all set to bring a classic love story of filmmaker Kamal Amrohi and actress Meena Kumari in his upcoming film, Kamal aur Meena. The film is scheduled for a 2026 release while the cast details are under wraps. However, an entertainment fan's Reddit post sparked the speculations that Kiara Advani is on board for the role of Meena Kumari.
In September, Siddharth made a long post announcing the film. A part of his note read, “Kamal Aur Meena – a cinematic experience that promises to capture one of the most iconic love stories in the history of Hindi cinema. Kamal Aur Meena will bring to life the epic, real-life romance between the legendary director and screenwriter Kamal Amrohi and the celebrated actress Meena Kumari."
