Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan has opened at the box office with all guns blazing. The film has been surpassing one record after the other, and the latest we hear is that the magnum opus has now overtaken the collections of Kamal Haasan's Vikram. According to trade experts, while Vikram has collected over Rs 410 crore worldwide, Ponniyin Selvan has overtaken the same and is inching towards Rs 450 crore. It was only recently that the film's lead star cast had announced that the film had already made Rs 400 crore.

With this feat, the first of the two-part series, will emerge as one of the highest grossers in Tamil cinema. The film, which is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy's novel of the same name, revolves around the battle for the throne after one of the Chola kings Sundara Cholar falls ill. The film had an ensemble star cast including Prakash Raj, Sarath Kumar, Parthiban, Shobita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Jayaram, Lal, Rahman to name a few. Music is by AR Rahman. While the cinematography is by Ravi Varman, editing is by Sreekar Prasad and the set has been erected by Thota Tharani. The film has been jointly bankrolled by Madras Talkies and Lyca Productions. The second part is expected to be released in mid-2023.

Kamal Haasan's Vikram, on the other hand, was a high-octane action entertainer, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. The film also starred Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Chemban Jose Vinod, Gayathrie Shankar, Kalidas Jayaram to name a few. The film, produced by Kamal Haasan's home banner, Raaj Kamal Films International, was declared one of the biggest hits in the industry this year. Kamal Haasan, who watched Ponniyin Selvan, called it a fantastic effort.
If Ponniyin Selvan continues at this rate, it is likely to surpass the collection of Superstar Rajinikanth's 2.0 as well, which was helmed by Shankar. The film marked the debut of Akshay Kumar in Tamil and also starred Amy Jackson.
