Ponniyin Selvan 2, which was released on April 28, opened to positive response among critics and moviegoers. The Mani Ratnam film was appreciated by many from the film industry. A few actors from Bollywood, too, heaped praise on the magnum opus which was expected to create new records at the box office.
Lyca Productions, one of the producers of the project, has now announced officially that the movie has grossed 300 crores from across the world. This has left fans of the Ponniyin Selvan franchise elated. The numbers do not come across as a surprise given the expectations the sequel had among cinephiles.
However, going by the current trend, PS 2 is unlikely to outsmart Ponniyin Selvan 1's worldwide collections. The first part, which was released in September last year, went on to collect almost 500 crores from various quarters. This time around, lack of unique promotions and rushed climax portions are said to have hampered the movie's initial expectation and box office collection respectively.
Initially, it was considered that beating PS 1 would be a cakewalk for PS 2 as there is no big release in Tamil in the coming weeks. But the word of mouth among the audience witnessed a decline after the weekend.
Interestingly, the collection for PS 2 in overseas markets is now more than its gross in Tamil Nadu. While the film failed to impress audiences in Telugu markets and north India, Kerala has been one territory which contributed a decent collection.
With the latest Malayalam movie 2018 garnering humongous response from moviegoers, it looks like PS 2 might not be the priority for audiences there henceforth. The trade is eager to know if the multi-starrer film on Cholas would be able to breach the 400 crore mark.
