Mammootty’s much-anticipated OTT debut Puzhu, helmed by debutante Ratheena, finally seems to have zeroed in on a release date. The movie, which was announced to be a direct-to-OTT release back in March, was set to be an April release before the streaming service shuffled their plans.
According to latest reports, the movie, which also has Parvathy Thiruvothu as part of the cast, will be a May release. Over the past few months, Sony LIV has been leading in terms in dropping original Malayalam content with the streaming service releasing movies such as Tovino Thomas’ Kaanekkaane, Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Churuli, Shane Nigam and Revathy’s Bhoothakalam and most recently, Dulquer Salmaan’s Salute. The platform will also be premiering Saiju Kurup’s Antakshari on April 22.
Mammootty’s Puzhu is currently expected to drop on the streaming service on May 13. The movie, which revolves around the underlying trust issues and explores the dynamics between a father and a son, is touted to be a crime drama and an intense family thriller. Shot entirely during the pandemic, the movie is also co-produced by Dulquer.
In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Dulquer opened up about why Mammootty was finally ready to make his foray into the streaming world, despite vociferously supporting theatrical releases during the pandemic. “I think he sort of understands that there are certain kinds of cinema right now that would make sense for the OTT viewer, who has the luxury of time and is in the mood to watch that kind of film,” he said, adding that both of them are open to experimenting.
Puzhu will also be Mammootty’s second release in May. The actor also has CBI 5: The Brain, which is set to hit theatres worldwide on May 1. The film, which is directed by K Madhu and scripted by SN Swamy, will mark the fifth instalment in the Sethurama Iyer franchise.
