Days after the head of Punjamon Illam, a Brahmin household in Kerala, had filed a petition at the Kerala High Court to stay the release of Mammootty’s Bramayugam , the makers of the film have decided to change the name of its character from Kunjamon Potti to Kodumon Potti.
The family had argued that the film would bring into disrepute their ancestral family, especially the character of Kunjamon, who is believed to have been the inspiration behind Mammootty’s role in the film set in the 18th century. They had sought to change the name of the film’s lead character and his traditional home as “it will cause serious prejudice” to the family.
While the makers of the movie are yet to reveal the true nature of Mammootty’s character in the movie, it’s believed that the role will have the superstar in negative shades. And given that it could be inspired by Kunjamon Potti, as mentioned in Aithihyamala, the film could portray him as a feudal lord who practises dark magic.
Who is Kunjamon Potty?
According to Aithihyamala, the character is believed to be a renowned tantrik and a devotee of Chathan. His battle of wits between his contemporaries Mattappalli Namboothripad, who is regarded as one of the most respected priests in Kerala, as well as Kadamattathu Kathanar is mentioned in the fables.
While in an earlier interview with OTTplay, Rahul has maintained that Bramayugam, which is set to hit theatres on February 15, doesn’t deal with dark magic and rather is a horror film with several mysteries and layers to the storytelling, the latest trailer does hint that the movie revolves around the character of Kunjamon Potti and his powers.
How is the Kodumon Potti related to Digimon?
The younger Mammootty fans who woke up to the news of the changed name of megastar’s character in the film – Kodumon Potti – also drew parallels to a Digimon character, Kudamon. For the uninitiated, Kudamon is usually a hard-to-get character that can only be “obtained as a collectible card”. It’s part of the Holy Ring set – which is kind of ironic considering that Mammootty’s character might actually be part of an unholy alliance in the movie, which also has Arjun Ashokan, Sidharth Bharathan and Amalda Liz in pivotal roles.
