Recently, Kannur Squad director Roby Varghese Raj revealed that Mammootty suggested making the crime thriller an OTT series, after reading the initial draft of the script.

Kannur Squad, the crime thriller which hit the theatres in September 2023, emerged as one of the biggest blockbusters of Malayalam cinema in recent times. However, after its OTT release, the Mammootty starrer earned rave reviews from both the Malayali audiences and the cine-goers across the globe, with its excellent making and performances. Recently, director Roby Varghese Raj opened up about the making of Kannur Squad, and revealed that the megastar suggested to make it an OTT series.
Mammootty wanted to make Kannur Squad an OTT series
According to the renowned cinematographer who made directorial debut with the crime thriller, the initial script of the movie had so much content. Most of the crew members, including leading man Mammootty felt that the original script, which had 300 pages, is perfect for an OTT series. Interestingly, the leading man, who also produced the film, even suggested Roby Varghese Raj to make it a web series.
Later, Sushin Shyam, the renowned musician who composed the music score for Kannur Squad, also felt the same. However, the filmmaker was keen to make Kannur Squad a feature film and release it in theatres. So, the writers' team including Rony David Raj and Muhammad Shafi reworked the script and trimmed it as much as possible, to make it fit into the 2 hours and 45 minutes timeframe of a feature film.
Kannur Squad to get a sequel soon
In a recent interview, director Roby Varghese Raj confirmed that Kannur Squad is indeed getting a sequel. However, the cinematographer-turned-filmmaker revealed that the ideas for a sequel are still in the budding stage, and nothing has been finalized so far. So, it has been confirmed that Kannur Squad 2 will not start rolling immediately. We will have to wait longer for the official announcement of the highly anticipated project.
