Mammootty has starred in numerous movies in his illustrious career but there is a certain aura attached to his Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha. Most millennials and Gen Z would have watched this iconic Malayalam film from 1989 on cable TV or streaming platforms. But now they get to experience the classic film on the silver screen as Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha is set to re-release in theatres on February 7, 2025. Read on to know why the iconic film, penned by the legendary MT Vasudevan Nair, should be on your watchlist for February 2025.
Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, directed by Hariharan, re-releases in Kerala on February 7, 2025. The classic movie will be re-released in 4K resolution with Dolby Atmos sound. SCube Films is bringing the iconic Malayalam film back to cinema halls, letting the younger generation watch the timeless classic in high quality.
Hariharan directed the movie, with a strong script by MT, giving Mammootty the evergreen character of ‘Chatiyan’ Chandu that is still remembered by cinephiles even after three decades.
The film is being re-released also as a tribute to MT, who passed away on December 25, 2024.
Mammootty brought to life the character of Chandu Chekavar, a warrior. Though the folklore of Vadakkan Pattukal dubbed Chandu as vile and a trickster, MT sought to portray him as a tragic hero who was wronged by everyone, including his lady love. Despite being a master of his craft with honest intentions, Chandu was misunderstood, MT portrayed in the film.
Mammootty delivers some of the most powerful dialogues in his cinematic career in this movie, which also fetched him a National Award for Best Actor. Suresh Gopi as his jealous cousin Aromal Chekavar and Balan K. Nair as his guru Kannappan Chekavar also give notable performances. Maadhavi plays Unniyarcha, his love interest, who eventually breaks his heart.
Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha joins the list of Malayalam movies that have been re-released in the recent past. Mohanlal’s Devadoothan and Manichitrathazhu, starring Shobana , were among the re-releases from Malayalam last year. Mammootty's Valyettan was also re-released in theaters in November 2024.
