Turbo, Malayalee from India to Guruvayoorambala Nadayil: Malayalam OTT releases in July 2024

After the back-to-back OTT releases of Malayalam industry’s Vishu movies such as Fahadh Faasil’s Aavesham, Pranav Mohanlal’s Varshangalkku Shesham and Unni Mukundan’s Jai Ganesh in May and June, July 2024 promises a list of exciting Malayalam films on OTT platforms. These include superhits such as Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Guruvayoorambala Nadayil and Mammootty’s Turbo as well as films featuring Nivin Pauly, Suraj Venjaramoodu and Asif Ali.

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s second superhit of this year is helmed by Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey director Vipin Das and revolves around a series of hilarious incidents that revolve around a wedding. After a person from Vinu’s past re-enters his life days before his wedding with Anandan’s sister, the two men end up being at loggerheads with each other - as one vows to go ahead with the wedding and the other doing all he can to prevent it from happening.

Nivin Pauly’s latest film is much-awaited, mostly because of the controversy that happened after the movie’s theatrical release where the makers were accused of plagiarism. That said, it doesn’t take away from the entertaining elements of the film, directed by Jana Gana Mana director Dijo Jose Antony, that revolves around an indolent youth who finds himself in the centre of a political controversy and is forced to flee his hometown. But where he lands also ends up challenging his biases and perspective.

Turbo

Mammootty stars as Turbo Jose in Vysakh’s action-entertainer that revolves around a Idukki native who has to travel to Chennai, after a favour he does ends up almost ruining a relationship. In Chennai, he gets entangled in a bigger conspiracy - one that involves business tycoons, politicians, banks and the underworld. The film, scripted by Midhun Manuel Thomas, is also hinted as the start of a franchise that could have Vijay Sethupathi back in Malayalam cinema.

Thalavan

Director Jis Joy’s second tryst with thrillers is also his best. Starring Asif Ali and Biju Menon as two police officers working in the same station but functioning in contrasting styles, the movie takes a turn after one of them gets accused of a murder and the other is tasked with investigating the case - giving him an opportunity at getting back at his superior. Will the motive for revenge or duty prevail?

Nagendran’s Honeymoons

Trying to find an easy way to make money to accomplish his dream of travelling abroad, Nagendran decides to get married and take a dowry. But the one problem is he doesn’t stop at one wedding. Director Nithin Renji Panicker, known for action-dramas Kasaba and Kaaval, helms this dark comedy that will mark Disney+ Hotstar’s third Malayalam web series after Kerala Crime Files and Periloor Premier League.
