Malayalam cinema had its most successful year in history, in 2024. When the year completed its first half, the Malayalam film industry reached new heights both creatively and commercially, thanks to back-to-back notable films. As reported earlier, the industry crossed the prestigious Rs. 1000 crore mark at the worldwide box office, with the total collection of its 2024 releases in just 5 months. When 2024 is set to step into its second half, Malayalam cinema is set to continue in its golden phase.

The Malayalam film touched the Rs. 1000 crore mark for the first time in its history, the total collections of the films that hit the theatres till May. When it comes to the half-yearly collection, the industry has reportedly crossed the Rs. 1200 mark. The beginning of 2024 was not so good for the industry, as some well-made films including Aattam failed to perform well commercially. Abraham Ozler, the Jayaram starrer directed by Midhun Manuel Thomas emerged as the first hit of the year. But it was followed by the debacle of Mohanlal’s Malaikottai Vaaliban.

The release of Premalu, the Naslen-Mamitha Baiju starrer brought in a massive change and emerged as the first Rs. 100 crore film of 2024. It was followed by Bramayugam, the Mammootty starrer which earned super hit status. Manjummel Boys, the next release opened the Rs. 200 crore club in Malayalam cinema and emerged as the all-time highest grosser. It was followed by Prithviraj Sukumaran and Blessy’s Aadujeevitham and Fahadh Faasil starrer Aavesham, the much-loved films that earned both commercial success and critical acclaim.

Meanwhile, quite a few films, including Vineeth Sreenivasan's directorial Varshangalkku Shesham, Prithviraj Sukumaran-Basil Joseph starrer Guruvayoorambala Nadayil, and Mammootty’s Turbo, earned super hit status. Asif Ali-Biju Menon starrer Thalavan, Tovino Thomas’ Anweshippin Kandethum, and Unni Mukundan’s Jai Ganesh, and earned as hits. When it comes to the well-made critically acclaimed films, Urvashi and Parvathy Thiruvothu’s Ullozhukku and Roshan Mathew-Darshana Rajendran's film Paradise earned much love from the critics and audience.

The upcoming Malayalam films of 2024

The second half of 2024 is expected to be equally eventful for the Malayalam film industry, with back-to-back releases. Bazooka, the upcoming Mammootty starrer directed by Deeno Dennis, Mohanlal’s directorial debut Barroz, the superstar’s 360th film (which is tentatively titled L360) directed by Tharun Moorthy, Fahadh Faasil starrer Odum Kuthira Chadum Kuthira, Tovino Thomas’ Ajayante Randam Moshanam and Identity, and Suresh Gopi’s Varaham, are some of the most anticipated upcoming Malayalam films that are expected to be released by the second half of 2024.
