Barely a month after its much-anticipated theatrical release, Mohanlal’s Malaikottai Vaaliban has dropped on a leading streaming platform. The movie, which marked Mohanlal and Lijo Jose Pellissery’s first collaboration, is currently available to stream in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi on Disney+ Hotstar.
The movie, dropped on the platform at 12am on February 23, and the streaming platform would be hoping it repeats the success of Mohanlal’s previous release Neru, which went on to be one of the most viewed Malayalam movies on Disney+ Hotstar in the recent past surpassing even Mammootty’s Kannur Squad.
Reasons to stream Mohanlal’s Malaikottai Vaaliban on Disney+ Hotstar
February 2024 has already become a special month for Malayalam cinema with theatrical releases like Tovino Thomas’ Anweshippin Kandethum, Naslen and Mamitha Baiju’s Premalu, Mammootty’s Bramayugam and Soubin Shahir’s Manjummel Boys presenting a memorable experience for the audience. In fact, seldom do so many movies of different genres enjoy as much success in theatres. This is spurred on by the change in viewing sensibilities of the viewers – who are now exposed to international cinema. That’s also why Lijo’s Malaikottai Vaaliban is expected to appeal to more audiences in Kerala as well as those outside the State’s borders after its OTT release.
The movie combines folktales and fantasy to tell a story that is influenced by Spaghetti Westerns and Amar Chitra Katha tales. Lijo’s making of combining these elements effectively to present a new experience for the audience make this movie a must watch. Even though the film failed to set the box office on fire , it’s still expected to have a cult following in the years to come.
Its cinematography by Madhu Neelakantan is another aspect apart from Mohanlal’s brilliant performance as a vagabond wrestler that serves to keep the audience engaged to the story.
Malaikottai Vaaliban sequel on the cards?
The movie ends with Vaaliban set to face off against his strongest adversary – his own father – in a superhero-style showdown. Lijo had earlier revealed that he wants to make the sequel even grander, but it would depend on how the audience accepts the first instalment.

Despite its tepid performance at the box office and mixed reviews, the producers of the movie were gung-ho about greenlighting the sequel. However, there’s still no official confirmation whether the film will happen or not.
Malaikottai Vaaliban also stars Sonalee Kulkarni, Katha Nandi, Danish Sait and Hareesh Peradi in pivotal roles. Anurag Kashyap had dubbed for Mohanlal in its Hindi version.
