Director Sathyan Anthikad’s family entertainer Makal, which hit theatres in April, is finally gearing up for its OTT release. The movie marked the comeback of Malayalam actress Meera Jasmine after a gap and the reunion of Jayaram and Sathyan Anthikad after almost a decade.
The comedy-drama, scripted by Iqbal Kuttipuram, revolves around the bonds that a daughter shares with her mother and father. Njan Prakashan fame Devika Sanjay plays the daughter, who is close to her mother Juliet, essayed by Meera Jasmine. After her father returns from the Middle East, he faces an uphill task of forging a bond with his daughter, which is made all the more tough when Juliet leaves to another district to take up work.
The film released in theatres along with Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Jana Gana Mana and Mammootty’s CBI 5: The Brain and received a lukewarm response. The makers would be hoping that the reception is better when it hits the OTT platform, Manorama Max, in the first week of July.
In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Meera told us that Makal is not a film that has a protagonist per se. “There are several key characters and during the narration itself, I could get into the skin of the role I was offered. Also, working in the film gifted me a lot of new moments as I got to perform a lot of emotional sequences that I hadn’t before,” she said.
Apart from Meera Jasmine, Jayaram and Devika, the film also has cameos from Sreenivasan, Nedumudi Venu and Kannada actor Balaji Manohar.
What could work most for the movie would be its genre, which appeals to the family audience that hadn’t flocked to the theatres when it released. Also, the presence of Naslen Gafoor, as the guy trying to woo Devika’s character in the film, was praised for his comedy in the movie. The actor’s previous films – Super Sharanya and Jo & Jo – were among the most-viewed films when they dropped on OTTs, and the makers of Makal would be hoping that he continues his successful run with this film as well.
