Director Sathyan Anthikad’s movies have always managed to bring in family audience to theatres. And that’s probably one of the reasons theatre exhibitors are thrilled about the director’s upcoming film Makal’s release, even though it’s sandwiched between two big superstar-driven movies – Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Jana Gana Mana and Mammootty’s CBI 5: The Brain.
Much like the filmmaker’s previous releases including Fahadh Faasil's Njan Prakashan, Makal too is a family entertainer revolving around a couple, essayed by Jayaram and Meera Jasmine, and their daughter, played by Devika Sanjay. The film, scripted by Iqbal Kuttipuram, has Jayaram playing a Gulf-returnee who starts a business. The impact his return has on his wife and daughter forms the plot of the film, which also has Sreenivasan, Innocent and Naslen Gafoor in pivotal roles.
Makal also marks Meera Jasmine’s comeback in Malayalam after a gap of several years. The National Award-winning actress, who had last played the lead in 10 Kalpanakal, will be essaying the role of a mother in the film. Meera had previously teamed up with Sathyan in films such as Rasathanthram and Vinodayathra, both of which had her in memorable roles.
Jayaram too is collaborating with Sathyan after a gap of 11 years. The duo had previously worked together in hits such as Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal and Sandesham. In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Jayaram said he was playing a rooted character in Makal and it adheres to the Sathyan Anthikad-type of films that the audience have grown up watching over the years. “The film has all elements that the audience have come to expect from the Jayaram-Sathyan Anthikad combo over the years,” he said.
The movie will hit theatres on April 29. Considering that the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce has enforced a 21-day gap between a film’s theatrical release and OTT streaming date, the movie is expected to drop on a digital platform only by May end or June.
