A week after Mahaveeryar’s theatrical release, the makers of the fantasy courtroom-drama have now tweaked the climax of the film for the benefit of the audience. The new version of the film began playing in theatres this weekend.

The film, which has Nivin Pauly, Asif Ali and Shanvi Srivastava in the lead, had two timelines set in the late 17th century and today’s era that are merged together to showcase the flaws of today’s legal system and institutions by having them judge a crime that is centuries old.

One of the grouses of the audience was that a couple of sequences of the satire didn’t go down well with the audience and also was deemed too abstract. The makers have reportedly made these minor changes in the latest version. The movie, helmed by Abrid Shine, also uses time travel to tell its story that has Nivin essaying the role of an ascetic while Asif plays the character of a prime minister, who is sent on a mission by his king.

In a recent interview with OTTplay, Nivin said, “The hero of this film is its script and we are all just characters in it. Also, it’s a blend of genres because it’s a courtroom drama with elements of time travel and fantasy. The film also asks a lot of pertinent questions and tackles a global issue through a beautiful narrative. “

The film is also co-produced by Nivin and marks his first collaboration with Asif after almost nine years. Lalu Alex, Lal, Siddique and Vijay Menon also play pivotal characters in the movie, which was shot in Kerala and Rajasthan during the pandemic.

The actor had also said that he wanted Mahaveeryar to be a novel experience for the audience. “Usually, when viewers watch a film, they might have an idea on how the story is progressing. In the case of Mahaveeryar, there are a lot of surprise elements,” he said.
