Madhavan, who has worked in a number of unique projects, gave two hits Vikram Vedha and Irudhi Suttru, backed by Sashikanth’s YNOT Studios. Sashikanth is making his directorial debut with Test, which stars Madhavan in the leading role. However, the actor was not so convinced to take up the project initially and even rejected it.

Speaking at an interview, Madhavan said, "I was harder on him than anybody else. I said no to the project and suggesting other actors since it was not going to work out for me. The way I look at cinema and pick projects has changed since the day I said no to him. It is not a small film to make. I mean, a first-time director who has never assisted before wants to come and tell me a story. It is the least out of all the stories I would expect Sashi to come and tell me"

The actor also said that it was the pandemic when he wished everyone came back on their legs and added, “This is not the kind of script it would come out from him I was afraid because he is not making a small film, it is fairly big budget for Tamil cinema. To go out for that level and put your neck out, I was not happy that he was doing it.”

Madhavan also talked about how he did not see the character he played, Saravanan, working and how there were back and forth several times. “I was not very comfortable because I was not able to relate to a character like Saravanan. For me, he felt like a loser and could not see redemption. He would take each of the no and kept came to a point where I could see his vision.”
