When filmmaker AR Murugadoss shared the release date (September 5) of his upcoming film Madharasi, his post read, 'Between rage and redemption, stands one man’. Even as the film stars Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role, the caption, in more than one way, suits the filmmaker. A comeback to Tamil cinema after nearly five years, and soon after a not-so-favourable Hindi film Sikandar, the success of Madharasi has to be a much-needed redemption win for Murugadoss. It is the litmus test for the filmmaker, who has given hits like Dheena and Ghajini. And will Sivakarthikeyan, who just took the ‘thuppakki’ from Vijay in GOAT exactly a year ago, be able to give the glory to the Thuppakki director this September 5?

Madharasi release date: Sivakarthikeyan film is a litmus test for AR Murugadoss; Will the glory of Thuppakki director be regained?

When Sivakarthikeyan got the ‘thuppakki’ from Vijay on September 5, 2024, it was moment that meant multitudes. It was not only the legacy that was handed over (given that Vijay had announced quitting cinema), but also it was just in time when Sivakarthikeyan began working with Thuppakki director AR Murugadoss. Coincidence, you say? Now, to just add on to it, AR Murugadoss and Sivakarthikeyan’s film Madharasi is coming just a year after GOAT, on September 5, 2025.

For Sivakarthikeyan, who is coming fresh off Amaran success, Madharasi is a step towards his growing stardom and ladder to tier one. But for Murugadoss, who has been the hitmaker for stars, it is a litmus test. A test and challenge of sorts to regain his lost glory. While it is the comeback to Tamil after five years since the release of Darbar, it is also the filmmaker’s immediate release after the Hindi dud Sikander. Now all eyes are set on Madharasi, a project that looks promising as we await how and if the thuppakki has indeed gotten stronger or not. It is a make-or-break situation for Murugadoss, who has never shied away from working with stars and giving them colossal hits.

Madharasi will hit theatres on September 5 and marks the first collaboration between Murugadoss and Sivakarthikeyan. Releasing in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam as Madharasi, and in Hindi as Dil Madharasi, the cast includes Rukmini Vasanth in her Tamil debut, Vidyut Jammwal, Vikranth, Biju Menon and others. The upcoming project is bankrolled by the production banner Sri Lakshmi Movies. Expected to be an action thriller, Madharasi will have music by Anirudh Ravichander.
