About a day ago, popular journalist and author Yashica Dutt confessed publicly her disappointment over the lack of acknowledgment for her contributions in an episode of Made in Heaven Season 2. This news spread like wildfire on the internet, many of whom slammed filmmaker Zoya Akhtar and her team for plagiarizing content.

The show grabbed the limelight after episode 5 of the recently released Season 2, titled The Heart Skipped a Beat, which stars Radhika Apte, and earned massive appreciation on social media for its portrayal of a Dalit wedding. Even BR Ambedkar’s grandson Prakash Ambedkar took to X (formerly Twitter) to praise the show’s writers.

Minutes after the social media began appreciating the development, the series received flak from Yashica Dutt, a Columbia University alum and author of the book ‘Coming Out As Dalit.’ She claimed that the episode draws inspiration from her book and credits have not been given for the same.

Responding to allegations levied by Dutt, the team of Made in Heaven 2 has issued a statement. In it, the team clarifies, “We are deeply disturbed with the misleading reports and comments in context of author Yashica Dutt claiming formal credit for her 'contribution' to Made in Heaven, a show set around wedding planners and remarkable brides who challenge prejudices deeply ingrained in our society. In Episode 5 - 'The Heart Skips A Beat', we peek into the life of Pallavi Menke a fictional character.”

“The central conflict of the episode is whether Pallavi should fight to have the wedding rituals that are a signifier of her identity, or not. None of it is drawn from Yashica Dutt's life or her book - 'Coming Out As Dalit'. We categorically deny any claim that Ms. Dutt's life or work was appropriated by us,” the makers stated in a press statement.

Made in Heaven chronicles the lives of Tara and Karan, two wedding planners based in Delhi. It can be viewed on Amazon Prime Video India.
