Sivakarthikeyan's first outing of the year, Maaveeran, which was released yesterday, opened to a good response from critics and moviegoers. Director Madonne Ashwin's sophomore film stars Saritha, Aditi Shankar, Mysskin and Sunil among others essaying pivotal roles in it.

It revolves around a cowardly cartoonist who takes on a powerful politician unintentionally. His life changes after an unknown voice starts predicting his future. Little did he realize that this unusual experience would land him in trouble. How he sets out to save several people's lives forms the rest of the story.

The movie was released amid good expectations, but the lack of chartbuster songs in it, unlike Siva's Doctor and Don, had a slight impact at the box office on day one. However, the film managed to register decent occupancy and ended up as the fifth biggest opener in Kollywood in 2023 after Thunivu, Varisu, Ponniyin Selvan 2 and Maamannan.

Maaveeran, released in Telugu under the title Mahaveerudu, has grossed around 12 crores globally. It grossed more than seven crores from Tamil Nadu. The word of mouth for the film is said to have picked up towards the evening and night shows yesterday.

Exhibitors hope the movie attracts a large audience on the weekend. Vijay Antony's Kolai, which is hitting the screens next Friday, is considered a potential threat to Maaveeran if it opens to a positive response. The Sivakarthikeyan-starrer has been receiving appreciation for its novel elements in the screenplay.

On the downside, the stretched second half and predictable scenes towards the climax spoiled the film's overall impact. But the movie ends up as a one-time watch owing to a few intriguing moments.
