Filmmaker Mari Selvaraj has carved a niche for himself with his politically and socially relevant movies in Tamil cinema. And now he will be lending his storytelling talents to small-screen audiences. He has taken up the role of the showrunner for an upcoming Tamil series, which has been titled SOS - Straight Outta Sunnambu Kaalvai.

As a showrunner, Mari will be tasked with the responsibility of making key creative decisions in the progress of the narration, and character arcs. He will be entirely responsible for the quality of the entire show. And Suriya Raj will write and direct every episode in the series, which will stream on SonyLIV. The series will be bankrolled by Tuhin Menon under the banner of Asiaville Studios.

While the series is in its very early stages of production, the showrunners have termed it as "a rollercoaster ride of emotions, breaking barriers and journey of fiery passion." The series will follow the struggles of two generations of hip-hop dance groups to build a dance studio in Sunnambu Kaalvai.

"Exploring the most favourite genre of dance combined with heart-wrenching drama, SOS unravels an extraordinary narrative. With hip-hop taking centre stage in the hearts of youth, this show promises a dance revolution and a journey of passion, resilience, and self-discovery. I am thrilled to bring this unique inspiring tale to viewers," said Mari Selvaraj in a statement.

The showrunners have not revealed the details of the other cast and crew of the series.

In the meantime, Mari Selvaraj is basking in the success of his latest movie Maamannan , which recently completed 50 days in cinemas. The movie was released on June 29 amid a lot of expectations as it marked the much-awaited comeback of iconic comedian Vadivelu to the big screen. And the movie didn't disappoint in that aspect.

Maamannan showed Vadivelu is a new dimension. Instead of putting Vadivelu's acting talents to create some gags, Mari used them to tell the heart-wrenching story of a seasoned politician from an oppressed class. The movie was both a critical and commercial hit. The film also has Fahadh Faasil, Keerthy Suresh, and Udhayanidhi Stalin in the lead roles.
