Mari Selvaraj, who made heads turn with his debut flick Pariyerum Perumal in 2018, went on to direct Dhanush-starrer Karnan in 2021, which also garnered praise from critics and cinephiles. Movie buffs have been eager to watch his third project Maamannan ever since it was announced.
Bankrolled by Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies, the film's audio and trailer launch event was organized earlier this month, after which the movie became the talk of the town owing to a few reasons.
Release date
The film is hitting screens on June 29. Though the team had revealed earlier that it will be released in June, the exact date was announced only recently. After a while, a Tamil movie is getting a solo release.
Trailer
The trailer of Maamannan received a good response among film buffs as Mari managed to keep intriguing elements in the promo video. Though it didn't reveal the movie's plot, cinephiles got a vague idea of what to expect from the project. A few movie geeks pointed out some of the similarities the trailer shared with the filmmaker's Pariyerum Perumal and Karnan.
Plot
The film is expected to deal with caste politics that is prevalent in a few districts in Tamil Nadu. How a father-son duo sets out to avenge the unfair treatment meted out to them forms the crux of the story. Mari's first two films dealt with the father-son relationship endearingly. There is speculation that the movie is based on a real incident, but the director hasn't confirmed it.
Cast
One of the major attractions of Maamannan is its unusual star cast. Vadivelu stars in a serious role after a long time, while Udhayanidhi plays an aggressive man who faces the brunt of caste politics. Fahadh essays the antagonist's role and Keerthy will be seen playing a communist. On the technical side, AR Rahman's music is considered the project's biggest USP.
Budget
Though makers haven't revealed the budget, it is one of the grand projects in Udhay's career. He has produced the movie and is expected to be his last movie as an actor. Hence, no stone has been left unturned to make the movie a grand one in terms of making.
Controversy
At the audio and trailer launch of the project, Mari spoke about the negative impact Kamal Haasan's Thevar Magan created in society and said that it was the anger that made him a movie like Maamannan. Interestingly, Kamal was the chief guest at the event. The director's comment didn't go down well with the Ulaganayagan's fans and they criticized him heavily on social media. As if this wasn't enough, short video clips from the old interviews of Thangaraj and Marimuthu, who played key roles in Pariyerum Perumal, which have them talking about Mari's unfair treatment of actors and assistant directors went viral.
OTT platform
Netflix bagged the movie's digital rights a while ago and an official announcement was made on the same. Maamannan is expected to drop on the platform around the last week of July. Kalaignar TV has acquired the film's satellite rights.
