What a comeback! That’s what fans of Malayalam superstar Dulquer Salmaan are saying, after the actor’s first film in over a year – Lucky Baskhar – has also earned him his first-ever Rs 100 crore grosser. The actor took to his social media page to share the news, with a poster of the financial thriller and confirming that the film has officially crossed Rs 100 crore worldwide.
Before the movie’s release, Dulquer had told in an interview that none of his movies had crossed the milestone, and he hoped the Venky Atluri movie could do it. His wish is now a reality, with the movie, which is now into its third week, crossing the milestone and looking set for more – given its OTT release could only be by the end of this month.
While the Malayalam actor had not breached the Rs 100 crore barrier in the four industries – Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi – he has worked in till Lucky Baskhar, he did come close a few times before. His first post-pandemic release Kurup, grossed over Rs 80 crore at the worldwide box office and his second Telugu movie, Sita Ramam, took it up a notch by grossing Rs 91 crore.
Lucky Baskhar had to face stiff competition from the Tamil movie Amaran, which starred Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi as well, but held on its own, despite its novel concept. The movie, which also has Meenakshi Chaudhary, is a testament to the actor’s fanbase, which has been growing in the Telugu states.
Dulquer is already being celebrated as a Telugu star , despite his Malayalam roots and him always maintaining that Malayalam is his ‘main’ industry. Within just three films – Mahanati, Sita Ramam and Lucky Baskhar, the actor is already now tagged in the same league as Telugu superstars Nani and Vijay Deverakonda; this is something that none of the actors, apart from Kamal Haasan and Siddharth, had accomplished in the Telugu film industry.
Incidentally, Lucky Baskar has surpassed the earnings of Nani’s latest movie Saripodha Sanivaram and is on track to overtake Dasara’s worldwide gross of Rs 115 Cr as well as Vijay Deverakonda’s Geetha Govindam, which raked in about Rs 125 Cr at the box office.
Given that Lucky Baskhar is still running in several theatres in the Telugu states, despite the wide release of Suriya's Kanguva and Varun Tej's Matka, the movie is expected to continue its theatrical run till the end of this month. As per reports, it is expected to begin streaming on Netflix from November 29.
While in Malayalam, Dulquer has signed three projects – one with RDX director Nahas Hidayath, actor-director Soubin Shahir and another with a newcomer, he will next be seen in a Tamil movie titled Kaantha. He will then move on to his fourth Telugu film, Pavan Sadineni’s Akasam Lo Oka Tara.
