RDX is the latest Malayalam action film that is playing to packed theatres. Viewers have been applauding the innovative action sequences in the film, with many saying that the film has redefined the action genre. However, there were other films before RDX that proved to be a treat for fans of action films.
Malayalam cinema has witnessed some great filmmaking and stunt sequences that have pleasantly surprised audiences. Here's a look at some movies with pulsating action sequences that are a must-watch:
Angamaly Diaries: Netflix
Angamaly Diaries revolves around the Palliyangadi team, which is a group of people in Angamaly who run small businesses, quarrel with each other, and generally enjoy their lives. The story is about Vincent Pepe, a young man who wants to create a gang of his own and is reminiscent of Ray Liotta's character in Goodfellas. However, things take a turn when Pepe gets involved in the pork business and crosses paths with Ravi and Rajan, who are local bigwigs. Although the plot may seem unremarkable, the film offers an incredible experience, especially with an 11-minute, single-shot climax that has been hailed as a marvel in filmmaking. The movie also features raw street fights, which are unpolished and don't seem like choreographed fake fights.
Ayyappanum Koshiyum: Amazon Prime Video
Directed by Sachy and starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, the theme of this film is the male ego. The film is about Ayyappan, an honest police officer with a dark past, and his clashes with Koshy, an ex-military man who uses his influence to force Ayyappan out of the police service. The performances of Prithviraj as Koshy and Biju Menon as Ayyapan are a treat to watch. The movie also boasts a good background score and splendid visuals of Attapady.

Thallumaala: Netflix
Thallumaala, directed by Khalid Rahman, is an action-packed movie that set a benchmark for Malayalam cinema. It revolves around the fights that take place between Wazim and his group of friends. The movie has some unique stunts performed inside a car and a theatre that were novel for Malayalam audiences. The movie is like a long Instagram reel, with a pulsating background score, swanky outfits, and trendy haircuts. The editing is another standout feature, as is the non-linear storyline. Tovino Thomas and Kalyani Priyadarshan's onscreen chemistry is a treat to watch, while Shine Tom Chacko and Lukman Avaran's swag add to the movie's charm.
Ajagajantharam: Sony LIV
This movie is like a series of extended fight sequences without a big plot. It is set during a temple festival where mahouts and locals engage in a fight. Although the reasons for many fight scenes are not convincing, the action sequences make the movie engaging, as do its tone, background score, and camera work. The film has several adrenaline-pumping moments and conflicts. Arjun Ashokan's performance as a menacing villain is a standout.
