When it comes to love stories in Indian cinema, one of the biggest conflict points explored has often been religious. Often, the inter-faith couple features a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl, with the folks, especially the latter’s, dead against the relationship. How they overcome this objection is then the crux of the tale. Over the years, there have been classic inter-faith love stories like Bombay and Veer Zaara, to name a few, and this week’s OTT release is a Kannada film joining this list.

Prithviraj and Parvathy Thiruvoth led this biographical romantic drama, a period love story set in the 60s between Kanchanamala and BP Moideen. Amid much objection from their families, Kanchanamala and Moideen decide to elope and leave everyone behind, but on his way back to the love of his life, the boat the latter’s on gets caught in a fatal whirlpool.

Veer Zaara

Shah Rukh Khan and Preity Zinta lead Aditya Chopra’s romantic drama about an Indian soldier, who meets a Pakistani woman, falls in love with her, but has to sacrifice his feelings for her and his freedom to ensure her happiness.

Bombay

Director Mani Ratnam’s romantic drama with Aravind Swamy and Manisha Koirala in the lead, Bombay explores the love story of Shekar, a journalist student, who falls in love with Shaila Banu. Despite objections from both sets of families, Shekar and Shaila get married and bring up their twin boys with both religions in their lives.

Ante Sundaraniki

Natural Star Nani and Nazriya feature in this romantic drama in which he is Sundar, an ad agency employee, and she is Leela a professional photographer from a Christian household. While the parents are the conflict points in this love story too, how Sundar and Leela use deception to eventually win them over forms the plot of Ante Sundaraniki.
