Kaalapani (1996)

This epic film, directed by Priyadarshan, had a slew of actors from across industries as it attempted to be a pan-Indian movie even before the word was coined. Mohanlal starred as Govardhan, who gets imprisoned in the notorious Cellular Jail in Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Prabhu, Tabu, Amrish Puri, Sreenivasan and Annu Kapoor form the strong ensemble cast of this film, which portrays the freedom struggle in a different light.

Pakshe (1994)

This film focussed on its protoginst Balachandran, who rises to be an IAS official, despite coming from a poor background. But he has to bid goodbye to his lover as he seeks to protect his family.  Shobhana played Mohanlal’s love interest in the movie, marking yet another classic combination of the darling onscreen pair.

Manthrikam (1995)

This Malayalam movie weaves in some action, thrilling moments, foot-tapping numbers and comedy to ensure that we get a wholesome entertainer. After a renowned scientist gets kidnapped, two police officers disguise themselves and seek to locate him. Mohanlal and Jagadish play the cops along with Raghuvaran, Priya Raman, and Rajan P. Dev.

Ulladakkam (1991)

Directed by Kamal, this Mohanlal-starrer revolves around Dr Sunny, who is all set to get married to Annie. When the psychiatrist treats one of his patients Reshma, she becomes obsessed with him, which leads to a tragic consequence. Shobana plays Annie, while Amala Akkineni is seen as Reshma

Sadayam (1992)

MT Vasudevan Nair scripted this film, which fetched him yet another National Award. The movie begins with Sathyanathan awaiting a death sentence in jail after killing four people, including two girls. Not an easy watch, this Malayalam film has come to be acclaimed over the years.
