Malayalam cinema has always taken a keen interest in the politics of the state, often portraying a dramatic account of the political affairs. This has led to several brilliant movies that not only showcase the political happenings but also promise a good cinematic experience. From Fahadh Faasil-starrer Malik to Mohanlal and Prithviraj Sukumaran's Lucifer , here are the must-watch Malayalam political thrillers that will keep you engrossed till the end.
Fahadh Faasil stars in the lead role of Alikka in this movie, which takes us to a coastal village in Kerala. He rules over this land, but the powers that be are not pleased by this. Dileesh Pothan, Joju George, Vinay Forrt, and Nimisha Sajayan are the notable names in the stellar supporting cast. The dubbed version of Malik is available on Aha and OTTplay Premium.
Prithviraj Sukumaran joined hands with Mohanlal for his directorial debut, Lucifer, which instantly clicked with the audience. The 2019 political action thriller follows the events after the Chief Minister’s death, and the subsequent power struggle between the party leaders and greedy family members. The Hindi-dubbed version of Lucifer is available on Sony Liv and OTTplay Premium. The second installment of the Lucifer franchise, Empuraan, is slated to hit theatres on March 27, 2025.
This riveting film takes us back to 1996, when a bunch of men hold the Collector hostage in Palakkad, seeking to repeal a controversial land bill that was detrimental to the tribal people. Kunchacko Boban, Joju George, Dileesh Pothan and Vinayakan play the lead roles in this political thriller.
The film revolves around a political leader, a cop and an activist, with different ideologies in life. Indrajith Sukumaran, Murali Gopy, and Hareesh Peradi play the three lead roles along with Lenaa, Remya Nambeesan, Jagadish and Vijayaraghavan in the film, which is considered one of the best Malayalam political films in recent times.
Written by Sachy, Ramaleela narrates the tale of politician Ramanunni, who gets a gun licence. But shortly after, a political opponent is shot dead and Ramanunni is forced to flee. Dileep plays the lead role in the film, along with Kalabhavan Shajon, Mukesh, Radhika, Prayaga Martin, Vijayaraghavan and Siddique.
