Kauravar, the Malayalam gangster film which hit the big screens in 1992, still remains in the favourites list of many cine-goes. Mammootty played the lead role in this Joshiy directorial, which is scripted by AK Lohithadas. Vishnuvardhan, the Kannada superstar made an extended cameo appearance. However, more than a gangster film, Kauravar is the story of two helpless fathers, who make the biggest sacrifices for their daughters. And that is exactly why we recommend this Mammootty starrer as the best film to revisit this Father’s Day on OTT, if you love vintage Malayalam films.
The iconic actor-director duo teamed up for many cult films during the 1980s and 1990s, and Kauravar remains one of their finest works. Joshiy, who has always brought out the best in Mammootty, yet again inspired the megastar to push his boundaries with his performance as Anthony, who loses his wife and daughter in a clash with the police force, in Kauravar. Also, the veteran filmmaker created a memorable cinematic experience, which is much more than just a gangster film.
Every Malayalam film fanatic who grew up watching the iconic films produced by the industry in the late 80s and early 90s is familiar with the powerful, gut-wrenching stories of AK Lohithadas. The writer-director, one of the finest talents ever produced by Malayalam cinema, delivered one of his best works with Kauravar. The story of the two fathers - Police Officer Haridas who raises convict Antony's daughter as his own, and the latter, who makes the biggest sacrifice in return - will leave you teary-eyed.
