The concept of ‘opposites attract’ seems to be a favourite for filmmakers to play with. Rom com enthusiasts have been bombarded with love stories based on the same, in all shapes and sizes, and it seems to be a never ending source of content even decades later. Riteish Deshmukh and Tamannaah Bhatia are gearing up to bring another story where a couple, akin to yin and yang, inexplicably find one another, in Plan A Plan B. The Shashanka Ghosh directorial follows the story of a wedding planner and a divorce lawyer who fall in love despite being polar opposites. As Plan A Plan B is gearing up for release on Netflix on September 30, here are a few Bollywood titles which sum up the ‘opposites attract’ concept, giving rise to some delightful love stories.
Namastey London
This 2007 film revolves around the story of Jasmeet(Katrina Kaif), an NRI woman living in London who is forcibly married to a Punjabi man named Arjun Singh(Akshay Kumar). The duo are off to a rocky start, after the young woman realises that Arjun can barely speak English. When she expresses her desire to get married to an Englishman, Arjun decides to help Jasmeet gain the man of her dreams. But, as rom coms go, Arjun and Jasmeet soon start to fall for each other. Namastey London, directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, is available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Dum Laga Ke Haisha
Bhumi Pednekar made a stellar debut with 2015’s Dum Laga Ke Haisha. The Sharat Katariya directorial follows the story of an uneducated young man named Prem, who reluctantly gets married to Sandhya, an educated overweight woman. Prem’s blind devotion to a nationaist organisation, as well as his disdain for Sandhya, puts a strain on the couple’s relationship, until Sandhya decides she has had enough. The film, starring Bhumi and Ayushmann Khurrana, can be streamed on Youtube.
Ishaqzaade
Marking Arjun Kapoor’s Bollywood debut, Ishaqzaade tells the tale of two young people coming from rival families, Parma and Zoya, who fall in love. But their romance is anything but smooth, as the duo have to face the wrath of their feuding families, who seem to be dead set against their union.
