Fahadh Faasil’s harrowing filming experience to AR Rahman’s music, reasons Malayankunju is unmissable

Fahadh Faasil’s Malayankunju is inching closer to its release on Friday and promises to be a film that will make full use of Fahadh’s acting prowess.

The film, directed by Sajimon, will see Fahadh share the screen with Rajisha Vijayan, Indrans, Deepak Parambol and Jaffar Idukki.

The upcoming survival thriller has been on the watchlist of Malayalam cinephiles for a number of reasons and they have been patiently waiting for the film’s release ever since it went on floors last year. Here are just a few of the many reasons why Malayankunju should be on your watchlist this week.

Fahadh Faasil’s first Malayalam theatrical release since 2020’s Trance

It has been quite a while since Fahadh Faasil fans have been waiting to catch the star in action on the big screen for a Malayalam release. The actor’s last Malayalam theatrical release came in the form of 2020’s Trance. Although the star did have prominent roles in Pushpa: The Rise(Telugu) and Vikram(Tamil), Fahadh’s subsequent Malayalam releases were released directly on OTT, including Irul, C U Soon, Joji and Malik. Except for Irul, which was released on Netflix, the latter three are available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The gripping plot

Inspired by real events, Malayankunju revolves around the story of a man who finds himself trapped in the aftermath of a devastating landslide caused by rains. The story unfolds through the eyes of Fahadh’s character Anikkuttan, a simple, short tempered man who struggles to stay alive during the ordeal. In a chat with OTTplay, Fahadh had called it a different kind of film which has not been seen in Malayalam cinema in recent years.

Fahadh Faasil calling it one of the toughest film he’s ever done

In conversation with OTTplay, Fahadh had revealed that Malayankunju was the toughest film he had ever been a part of. The film had to be shot about 30 feet underground, in a narrow space which was so small that one could not even stand upright in it. Furthermore, the second half was not very dialogue heavy either, which put Fahadh’s skills to the test yet agin. “So, it was physically taxing and I was exhausted mentally as well; it’s one of the most difficult movies I have been part of”, said the actor.

AR Rahman’s music

AR Rahman has never disappointed when it comes to composing soundtracks, and the musical maestro promises to hit it out of the park with his contribution to Malayankunju’s soundtrack as well. The musician has composed four tracks for the film, out of which Mannum Niranje and Cholappenne were released recently. Malayankunju mark’s Rahman’s first Malayalam film after a gap of almost three decades.

Mahesh Narayanan’s script

Time and again, Mahesh Narayan and Fahadh Faasil have proved to be a winning combo. Mahesh has penned the script to Fahadh’s popular films such as Take Off, CU Soon and Malik, and fans are eagerly waiting to see if the duo will bring forth another winner in the form of Malayankunju.
