Given that Jigarthanda DoubleX is the follow-up movie to Karthik's smash hit Jigarthanda (2014), many wondered whether it would launch a new cinematic universe in Tamil cinema.

Karthik Subbaraj's own cinematic universe?

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj has started a new trend with his cinematic universe, called LCU. The overlapping storylines, the cross-over camoes and teasing onscreen collaboration between the biggest stars have all become the sure-shot formula for massive box office success in the Tamil film industry.

Will Karthik also follow in the footsteps of Lokesh and create his own cinematic universe with overarching storylines and recurring characters and call it KCU? The quick answer is no.

Karthik clarified the difference between a movie franchise and a universe. He noted that Jigarthanda definitely belongs to the former. "This is a spiritual sequel. It has the soul of the Jigarthanda: a gangster and a filmmaker meet at some point and the movie tells how that art transforms their lives. We have retained that core idea even in this movie. But, there is no connection between Jigarthanda and Jigarthanda DoubleX," he explained.

Jigarthanda DoubleX takes place in the late 1970s, but like the original movie, it's also set against the backdrop of Madurai. And the filmmakers are promoting it by calling it a 'Pandyaa Westren,' which is a fun mix of 'pan-India' and 'Western.'

Besides writing and directing, Karthik has also produced Jigarthanda DoubleX for his home banner Stone Bench Films. The movie is due in cinemas during the Diwali holiday.
