Malaikottai Vaaliban, the period fantasy film that marks the first onscreen collaboration of Mohanlal and Lijo Jose Pellissery, is now gearing up for its release. The Malayalam superstar and acclaimed filmmaker are now busy promoting their ambitious project, which is slated to hit theatres on January 25. In one of their recent promotional interviews, the Malaikottai Vaaliban director revealed his favourite films of the veteran actor.
The renowned director, who has always made unique choices in his career, surprised the cine-goers by picking two not-so-famous Mohanlal films as his favourites from the superstar’s filmography. Interestingly, Lijo Jose Pellissery revealed that Paadamudra by R Sukumaran, and Ulsavapittennu, which is helmed by actor-director Bharath Gopy, are his favourite Mohanlal films to date.
Lijo Jose feels that the multiple National Award winner delivered the finest performances of his acting career in these two films and added that both Paadamudra and Ulsavapittennu are extremely underrated. Even though film fanatics have often discussed Mohanlal’s performance in the R Sukumaran directorial, no one really spoke about his portrayal of Aniyan Thampuran in Bharath Gopy’s film.
According to the Malaikottai Vaaliban director, the superstar’s role in Ulsavapittennu is a much more difficult part to play, as it demands extraordinary subtility. Well, director Lijo Jose Pellissery is on point with his observation, as even the diehard fans of Mohanlal forgot about both the film and his extraordinary performance as Aniyan Thampuran. The filmmaker, as usual, left his fans surprised and happy by not picking any of the legendary actor’s most famous works as his favourites.
The R Sukumaran directorial, which hit theatres in 1988, featured Mohanlal in a double role as Maathu Pandaram and Soap Kuttappan. Paadamudra featured a stellar cast including Seema, Nedumudi Venu, Urvashi, Sithara, Rohini, Shyama, Mala Aravindan, Jagadish, and others in the supporting roles, but ended up being an average affair at the box office. You can watch Paadamudra on YouTube for free.
Ulsavapittennu, which marked Bharath Gopy’s second outing as a director, is penned by John Paul. Mohanlal won a Special Jury Award at the Kerala State Film Award for his performance in this 1988-released movie. Ulsavapittennu featured Jayaram, Parvathy Jayaram, Sukumaran, Devan, Sankaradi, Sukumari, Sumithra, and many others in the key roles. This underrated gem is currently available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
