Ju Ji-hoon's Light Shop, which released last night, has left everyone intrigued. Most have asked many questions, and it's just four episodes that are out at this point. Here are some questions we came across and their potential answers...
Light Shop commences with the very first eerie incident. Seol-hyun's Lee Ji-young is a woman in a white dress waiting at the bus stop. There, Uhm Tae-goo's Hyun-min offers her to freshen up at his house, which is nearby.
Ji-young, who has a huge suitcase with her, approaches him. However, there's one thing about her that once anybody notices, they die (or so it seems). It is her hands. Ji-young's skin almost tore out because every time she waited at the bus stop, she tapped her fingers on the bench, almost waiting impatiently for someone. And she waited at the bus stop every single day, which led to Hyun-min trying to help her out in the first place.
The first four episodes hint that she constantly tries to find a human who can see her soul. And then she hunts them down. Well, at least all the deaths happen around her. Co-incidence? We highly doubt that.
Towards the end of episode 1, Hyun-min noticed Ji-young’s fingers. They were torn from waiting every night for hours at an end. She then opened her suitcase, which was full of tools. She took out a scissor from the toolkit. The next thing we know, there's blood dropping out of her suitcase. This is a major hint that she killed him, and that was just the beginning of it all.
In Light Shop episode 2, we notice Kim Min-ha's Seon-hae shift in an abandoned society. She hates people and so, it is the perfect place for her, except, there's one door in her room which always remains locked. This is the first big suspicion about a supernatural entity being present and exactly that happens.
Ju Ji-hoon's Won-young sees ghosts and knows how to deal with them. Thus, he had already warned his niece Hyun-ju (Shin Eun-soo) to pretend that everything is normal even when things aren't around ghosts. Unfortunately, Seon-hae does the opposite. She panics and screams upon realizing that she is in the house, alone with a ghost. Thus, she panics, screams for help and even breaks the window. The ghost eventually opened the door for her. By that time, though, Ji-young was around. Since she is already touted as the vicious ghost since episode 1, she is likely to have pushed Seon-hae on to the ground. So, from the looks of it, Seon-hae is dead.
Ji-woong (Kim Ki-hae) sure had heard the rumours and he was not ready to risk it. He sang a song while vising the neighbourhood every night, till one night, he saw Ji-young. They had a normal conversation, till he noticed her fingers. Everything went wrong for him from that moment. His legs were twisted, almost as if he were a ghost himself. Ji-woong struggled to get out of the neighbourhood and was caught up outside of Seon-hae's house, which is where Ji-young told him that there's no way out. Given the way the series had been progressing up to the point, he was probably dead long time back and was just not able to come to terms that he is now a ghost. His death story is not yet explored, but it is likely that like the very coma patient who was declared dead and spoke to the helper at the morgue for comfort, Ji-woong is also dead and has been trying to find a way out. However, the bigger question is that if Sun-hae cannot see ghosts but she could see Ji-woong, when did he die? Probably after seeing Ji-young. Sun-hae, in her human form, could not see Ji-woong (even though she heard him clearly), and he was too busy trying to grasp his reality.
From the looks of it, yes. But that would be too easy. There are too many supernatural forces in the neighbourhood, but there has to be an answer. That is yet to be explored. For now, anybody who ends up in the neighbourhood cannot stay human. It is the area for the spirits, most of them between bad and evil. And they cannot survive around each other. Thus, they find their own paths and rarely ever try to meet one another. They are all lost souls, most of them seeking their way back but knowing there is none.
Every being, humans and ghosts, end up in the only light shop in the area. Won-young is almost an accountant who knows all about the supernatural beings and keeps them in check. His identity was hinted at through Kim Dae-myung's Kim Sang-hoon. These are beings whose eyes sparkle under lights. It is why this Light Shop owner always wears glasses. They are expected to keep the ghosts in check, and no human should see them in their real form or their lifespan decreases considerably. It is why Won-young asked his niece Hyun-ju to rush home rather than be around him. It is why even a ghost like Ji-young turned around and went the other way despite finding her new target in Hyun-ju.
Sung-sik (Bae Sung-woo) saw Kim Sang-hoon in all his glory. This is not a normal being, not even a human, from the looks of it. They appear to be the beings who keep the world in the balance. It is why ghosts are afraid of them and humans should be. The Light Shop was, in a sense, a direct reflection of the lifespan that everybody visiting the store has. Sung-sik's eyes fell off and the light he was attracted to was dimming out too. This is a major hint that his lifespan is shortened to a great extent after seeing what he shouldn't i.e. Sang-hoon's eyes.
Hyun-ju is alive, but only for now. Her mother had to sacrifice herself at the hands of Ji-young and stay back to protect her daughter from the ghost. Ji-young observed it all and thus, she maintained her distance from Hyun-ju, who could see ghosts. Won-young being the uncle also kept Hyun-ju safe for the longest time.
Many of the coma patients were declared dead before they ended their will to live. This was most evident in Kim Sun-hwa's Park Hye-won who wanted to live. She traumatized Hyun-ju as well as Park Bo-young's Young-ji.
After some point, both the women understood and tried to play their part. While Hyun-ju tried to behave normal around ghosts and eventually succeeded, Young-ji had the upper hand since she was closer to the bodies that the souls resided in. Being a nurse, who saw and felt the pain all the ghosts around her went through (the tears in the life incident), Young-ji decided to do her bit in helping the souls find a little calm while they try to find their fighting spirit to come back or decide to go to the otherworld in peace. Young-ji had a playlist handy and spoke to the coma patients, trying to soothe their pain. She spoke to them individually and if not able to attend them, she left a calming music for them. With that, she did her bit to help the souls. Interestingly, the incidents did go down to a considerable number ever since she took the initiative. So, in a sense, her voice and music did reach them, even though not everybody could make sense of it.
