Lokesh Kanagaraj's Leo was released amid huge expectations yesterday and opened to an above average response among film buffs and critics. Vijay's presence, a few action blocks, Manoj Paramahamsa's visuals and Anirudh's background score stood out in the movie.

The ineffective screenplay in the second half, lack of depth in crucial characters and inappropriate LCU reference was a big letdown, leaving cinephiles disappointed. However, this hasn't deterred film buffs from watching it on the big screen. The action drama was expected to shatter several records at the box office.

Leo emerges as the biggest opener among Indian movies in 2023

Amid various figures doing the rounds, the makers have now announced the film's first day worldwide collection. The Vijay-starrer has earned 148.50 crores, making it the biggest opener among Indian projects this year. It is also the biggest ever opener in the history of Tamil cinema.

Though several movie lovers predicted that Leo is likely to emerge as the biggest Kollywood opener, the official figures have surpassed their expectations. It has to be seen how the film performs at the box office in the coming days.

Leo targets Jailer's final collection

If the film manages to register good footfalls in the coming days, Leo could outdo Jailer's worldwide numbers. The latter has collected more than 600 crores after four weeks of its theatrical run. The numero uno Kollywood movie in terms of collection is Rajinikanth's 2.0.

Cinephiles opine that Leo could have easily surpassed it had the makers taken a keen interest in releasing its Hindi version across north India. They couldn't do it as the OTT window was less than eight weeks and the leading exhibitors refused to screen the movie.
