Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth have agreed to star in Lonely Planet, a Netflix film written and directed by Susannah Grant. Lonely Planet is advertised as a Moroccan love story. The plot is being kept under wraps for the time being. Grant is also producing for 3dot Productions alongside Sarah Timberman and Liza Chasin, with Netflix's VP of Studio Film, Kira Goldberg, serving as creative lead.

The film extends Netflix and 3dot's creative cooperation, which has already generated the streamer's next thriller series, Anatomy of a Scandal, based on Sarah Vaughan's book. In 2019, 3dot signed a multi-year first-look film contract with Netflix, with adaptations of Taylor Jenkins Reid's best-selling novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Diane Cardwell's memoir Rockaway on the way.

Grant has been nominated for two WGA Awards, as well as nominations for the BAFTA Awards, the Gotham Awards, and the PGA Awards. She has also been nominated for an Oscar and three Emmy Awards. She previously worked on Netflix's critically acclaimed limited series Unbelievable as the showrunner, writer, director, and executive producer, as well as writing and directing the 2006 drama Catch and Release, starring Jennifer Garner, Timothy Olyphant, and Kevin Smith. The 5th Wave, The Soloist, Charlotte's Web, In Her Shoes, Erin Brockovich, 28 Days, Ever After: A Cinderella Story, and Pocahontas are among the films Grant has written or co-authored.

She and Patrick Wilson co-created the CBS medical drama A Gifted Man, and she also wrote for Party of Five. The multi-hyphenate is also executive producing the FX comedy Fleishman Is in Trouble, in which she will star.

Following nominations for Wild and Rambling Rose, Dern won her first Oscar in 2020 for her role in Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story. She has received a BAFTA Award, two Critics' Choice Awards, two Independent Spirit Awards, five Golden Globes, the Casting Society of America's Lynn Stalmaster Award, a Gotham Tribute Award, and other awards for her work.

Little Women, The Tale, Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, Downsizing, Wilson, The Founder, Certain Women, 99 Homes, The Fault in Our Stars, The Master, Little Fockers, Everything Must Go, Year of the Dog, Inland Empire, Lonely Hearts, Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, October Sky, Citizen Ruth, Wild at Heart, Blue Velvet, and Mask are among Dern's film credits. Her television credits include F Is for Family, Big Little Lies, Twin Peaks, and Enlightened, among others. Other planned projects include Colin Trevorrow's Jurassic World Dominion, Florian Zeller's drama The Son, Justin Kurzel's sci-fi drama Morning, Abe Sylvia's TV series Mr. and Mrs. American Pie, and Tim Harper's animation film Ozi.

Hemsworth has acted in films such as Isn't It Romantic, The Duel, Independence Day: Resurgence, all four Hunger Games films, The Dressmaker, Empire State, The Expendables 2, The Last Song, and others. Two of his TV credits are The Most Dangerous Game and The Elephant Princess. He'll next be seen in Russell Crowe's second narrative film as director, Poker Face, in which he'll also star.
