As we step into the last few days of 2024, Tamil cinema might be ending on a low note with no big releases geared up for release this year. However, some of the biggies like Veera Dheera Sooran, and Vidaamuyarchi are scheduled to release in January 2025. Sorgavaasal – Netflix (December 27)
Sorgavaasal is headlined by filmmaker-actor RJ Balaji and is a prison-set action drama helmed by debutant Sidharth Vishwanath. The film also stars Karunas, Samuel Abiola Robinson, Hakkim Shah, Natarajan Subramaniam, Saniya Iyappan, Sharaf U Dheen, Balaji Sakthivel, Ravi Raghavendra, Santhana Bharathi, Anthonythasan Jesuthasan, and others in supporting roles. Sorgavaasal which is inspired from the events that took place in Madras Central Prison in the 90s, is about a man who gets wrongly accused of murder and lands up in jail, which proves to be a hell to him.
The Smile Man – Theatres (December 27)
Sarathkumar-starrer The Smile Man is a crime drama directed by Syam and Praveen. The film marks the veteran actor's 150th outing. The Smile Man revolves around a senior cop who is suffering from Alzheimer's. The cast of the film includes Sri Kumar, Sijaarose, Ineya, George Maryan, Rajkumar, Kumar Natarajan, Baby Azhiya, and others.
Thiru Manickam – Theatres (December 27)
Headlined by Samuthirakani, Thiru Manickam is a family drama written and directed by Nanda Periyasamy. Actors Bharathiraja, Thambi Ramaiah, Karunakaran, Chaams, Vadivukarasi, and Ilavarasu are also part of the cast. The film is touted to be a family drama and marks the first time Samuthirakani will be doing a titular role.
Uppu Puli Kaaram – Disney+ Hotstar (ongoing)
Uppu Puli Kaaram is an ongoing series, which revolves around an elderly couple who run an eatery and live with their four grown-up children. However, their lives take a turn when the father’s son from another mother comes to live with the family, leading to drama and confusion. With the couple having their own secret about their new son, and the latter being a famous actor, the series is a family drama focusing on the life of each family member, the children’s love lives, and how their careers and ambitions cross paths.
