After the big-ticket releases of the festive week, Martin, Vettaiyan, etc., this week is relatively more peaceful with not many Kannada original or dubbed titles currently listed for release in theatres or on OTT.
Kannada filmmaker BS Pradeep Varma collaborated with actor Prabhu Mundkur on the story and screenplay of their new film, Murphy, which will be in theatres this week. Named after an erstwhile British radio brand, the humble device appears to be a plot point in the film, which, according to Prabhu, is also an exploration of human relationships. At the crux of it is his relationship, or the lack of it, with his father. Murphy also stars Dattanna, Roshni Prakash and Ila Veermala in pivotal roles.

Produced by actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty, Laughing Buddha is a comedy drama directed by Bharath Raj M, who’d earlier made Hero with the former in the lead. This time around, he’s got Pramod Shetty as the protagonist, a police constable with a love for fresh home cooked food and a burgeoning waistline. Pramod is Govardhan, the food lover who uses this to gain the confidence of potential suspects and gets them to confess to their crimes.
When the station sub inspector knocks around a suspect who then turns around and claims to have lost all memory of what he’s stolen and where he’s stashed it, Govardhan is called in to see if the tricks up his sleeve will help the man remember. The film also stars Teju Belawadi, Sundar Raj and Diganth, among others.

Director Srinivasa Raju’s hit romantic comedy, featuring Golden Star Ganesh in the lead, was expected to be the big OTT release for Dasara, but there was no sign of the film, with Vinay Rajkumar’s Pepe making it to the platform instead. The buzz in industry circles is that Krishnam Pranaya Sakhi will be available to stream by the third week of October, but there’s been no official confirmation from the team or the platform. The film is still in a handful of theatres, but the OTT release is not far off, say sources.
