It’s that time of the year when the big-ticket Sankranti/Pongal releases from Telugu and Tamil cinema take over the Karnataka box office. For a while now, Kannada filmmakers have chosen to let these movies run riot and stayed away from staking claim to the first festival of the year.
A couple of years ago, Daali Dhananjaya tried to change this with Orchestra, Mysuru!, pushing it as “Sankrantige Ond Kannada Chitra”, but that did not work out, while in the subsequent years, big stars had late December releases that continued to be in a few theatres during the festival.
This year, there are 4 Kannada films that will be vying for a share of the Sankranti box office. There are no star-driven films, but what’s on offer are movies in a wide variety of genres, from horror comedy to romance, social drama, and more.
Director Keshava Murthy’s Nimma Vasthugalige Neeve Javabdaararu explores the attachment to material possessions, and how that is tied to personal insecurities. Over time, these insecurities manifest into reality, revealing the complex interplay between people and their possessions, reads the official synopsis. Dileep Raj leads the cast and is joined by Apoorva Bharadwaj, Vamshi Krishna, Shilpa Manjunath, and Madhusudan Govind, among others.
