Over the past few days, one show that has managed to grab the most headlines is Lanterns. Based on the story of Green Lantern, the DCU show has been generating significant buzz as the makers are shaping it at the DCU head office. With plans to start filming in early 2025, James Gunn, Peter Safran, and the team at DCU are finalizing the cast and crew. The latest buzz revolves around who will play the lead role, with the makers initially approaching MCU's Josh Brolin, known for playing Thanos. However, the actor rejected the part, leaving the search for the lead role open again. Now, it seems the studio has decided to approach another actor and has also hired an interesting director for the project.
According to reports from Comic Book Movies, James Gunn has found another director for Lanterns—Lucy Tcherniak, known for Sunny, Station Eleven, and The End Of The Fing World*. There is no update on how many episodes Lucy will oversee, but her addition is intriguing considering her impressive storytelling style. Another director in talks for the project is Stephen Williams (Lost, Watchmen, Westworld), with reports suggesting that he may direct the pilot episode.
Meanwhile, with Josh Brolin passing on the role of Hal Jordan, the spot remains vacant. Previously, reports mentioned that the studio had shortlisted Ewan McGregor and Matthew McConaughey as potential candidates if Brolin declined. However, the latest update suggests that the studio is now looking to approach Chris Pine. Since Pine was already part of the DCEU in Wonder Woman, it seems likely that the studio maintains a good relationship with him.
The series, being developed under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart—both members of the Green Lantern Corps. This intergalactic team is equipped with rings that grant them superhuman powers to help defend specific sectors of the cosmos. The plot of Lanterns will feature Stewart as a new recruit who joins the veteran Jordan in investigating a murder in the American heartland.
Chris Mundy, known for Ozark and True Detective, has been hired as the showrunner and will also serve as an executive producer alongside Damon Lindelof and Tom King. Lanterns will be an eight-episode series and is set to be part of HBO Originals under the new plan.
