SunNXT confirmed the OTT release date of Lal Salaam, which stars Superstar Rajinikanth in an extended cameo, on Monday. The film will finally make its streaming debut on April 12, coinciding with the celebration of the Tamil New Year. You can also stream the film on OTTplay Premium .
The digital release of Lal Salaam was delayed longer than usual, leaving fans of Rajinikanth wondering why . As per current industry trends, new Tamil movies arrive on streaming platforms within four weeks of their initial theatrical release. This rule applies even to the biggest blockbusters at the box office.
For instance, Thalapathy Vijay's Leo made its OTT debut just after completing a little more than four weeks' run in theatres, even as it was performing extremely well in terms of collections. Movies that garner mixed reactions and fail to strike a chord with the mass audience, especially stick to shorter OTT windows to secure their investments.

Lal Salaam, however, was an exception. The film was first released in cinemas on February 9 and it remained outside the realms of streaming longer than expected, despite mixed reviews and poor box office performance.
Bankrolled by Lyca Productions, Lal Salaam is co-written and directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth. The film marked her return to feature film direction after a long hiatus, and with Rajinikanth adorning the posters, many hoped it would give her a much-needed break at the box office.
Lal Salaam, however, failed to live up to commercial expectations. The film received mixed reviews, undercutting its box office potential.
Inspired by real-life events, Lal Salaam saw Rajinikanth throwing his full weight behind increasing the movie's overall appeal. In addition to playing an extended key cameo role named Mohideen Bhai, he also penned dialogues for the movie. Rajinikanth was also extensively involved in promoting the movie before its release.
Yet, Lal Salaam failed to click with the audience. The film also features a soundtrack by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman. It mainly revolves around two lead characters, played by Vishnu Vishal and Vikranth, and addresses a pressing social issue of growing intolerance and distrust among people of different faiths.
