After a lot of speculations regarding Dulquer Salmaan starrer Kurup's release, the film is finally hitting the big screens on November 12, 2021. Earlier, it was rumoured that, like many actors in Malayalam, DQ was also opting for a direct OTT release of his most-awaited film. On Saturday, a press meet event of Kurup was held in Kochi, where the actor-producer along with the whole team of the film marked their presence.
During the event, Dulquer was asked about his take on several Malayalam films skipping theatrical release and streaming their films directly on OTT. To which the actor stated, "The OTT discussion started in full swing in the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When we hold a film's release, it's not just lying there. The funds need to be increased as production costs also increase. These are recurring costs that all the production houses have to bear until the film is released. To save ourselves from that, we had to explore all the options."
Dulquer further spoke about how Kurup was made for a theatrical release and how he wanted the audience to enjoy the film only on the big screen. The actor added, "No one would want a big-budget film like this to be given direct OTT release. No one from the Kurup team would agree to that. During the post-production process, the treatment given to a film is to get a theatrical experience. If we have to take the OTT route, the treatment of the post also has to be changed entirely. However, the shooting process which we have done on a large scale cannot be enjoyed well on the small screens. Going further, there will be small budget films which will take the OTT route, but there are films which have to be experienced only in theatres."
However, after the theatrical release of Kurup, the film will soon stream on Netflix as the OTT platform has bagged the streaming rights.
Talking about Kurup, the film is an adventure drama based on Kerala's most elusive criminal who has been on the run since the mid-1980s. It is inspired by a true story.
Directed by Srinath Rajendran, the film also features Indrajith Sukumaran, Sunny Wayne, Shine Tom Chacko, and Sobhita Dhulipala in supporting roles.
