Kannada superstar Darshan is known to speak his mind, sometimes even without giving much thought to the repercussions his words could have. The actor, who makes frequent public appearances and speaks to the media only when he has an upcoming release, has been busy giving umpteen interviews for his next Kranti. And every now and then, something he says becomes a hot topic of discussion.
When Kranti promotions began, one of the first interviews Darshan did to address the fact that his ‘celebrities’ (fans) were doing their own bit to publicize the film and taking out processions, etc., none of which was prompted by him or the film team, he spoke about being touched by their love. In saying this though, he spoke about how the love for a star is often seen when he dies, as was the case with the late Puneeth Rajkumar, and that Darshan’s fans were showing it in his lifetime. Meant in good spirit with no malice, his comment, though, sparked outrage among Power Star fans who demanded that he tender an apology, which, of course, did not happen.
The latest issue cropped up after Darshan spoke about holding on to Lady Luck. Referring to luck as “Adrushta Devathe”, he said that one ought to strip her and hold her captive at home, because if you give her clothes and let her free, she will go elsewhere. The actor said this in reference to producers approaching him for roles and taking an advance before proceeding with any other conversation.
While fans argued that his statement was being represented out of context, with video snippets ending with the stripping and locking up of ‘Adrustha Devathe’, netizens took umbrage at the comment and said that it was in bad taste any which way. Speaking ‘without a filter’ is not an excuse for this, they reckoned. Darshan has already said this in two interviews and social media is currently abuzz as those against and for the superstar fight it out. Interestingly, some of those who have taken offence at the statement include self-proclaimed Darshan fans.
